Your attic is costing you every winter
Older Chicago homes lose heat through thin attic insulation. It shows up in four ways:
High heating bills
The furnace runs and runs.
Cold rooms
Especially upstairs and in finished bungalow attics.
Ice dams
Heat escaping melts snow that refreezes at the edge.
Drafts
Cold air moving where it shouldn't.
How much insulation does a Chicago attic need?
The U.S. Department of Energy recommends R-49 to R-60 for attics in our climate. With blown-in insulation, that's roughly 13 to 16+ inches.
Many older Chicago homes have far less than that, and what's there has often settled or been disturbed over the years. Topping it up is one of the simplest ways to keep heat in the house.
What we look at in your attic
A good insulation job starts with understanding the whole attic, not just adding more fluff.
Insulation depth and condition
How much you have, what type it is, and whether it's settled, wet or damaged.
Air leaks
Gaps around light fixtures, pipes, chimneys, wiring and wall tops that let warm air rise into the attic.
Ventilation
Soffit and roof vents, plus baffles so new insulation doesn't block airflow.
Bath and kitchen fans
Whether fans vent outside, not into the attic, where they can cause moisture.
Moisture and mold
Signs of roof leaks or condensation that should be fixed before insulating.
Old wiring
Older knob-and-tube wiring needs an electrician's review before it's covered with insulation. We'll flag it if we see it.
Why we air seal before we insulate
Insulation slows heat moving through it, but it doesn't stop air. Warm air leaking up through gaps carries heat (and moisture) right past it. Sealing those gaps first is what makes the new insulation actually work, and it's a big part of preventing ice dams.

Questions
How much does it cost?
The assessment is free. After it, you get a fixed written quote for the work, with no obligation.
How long does it take?
Most attics are done in one day.
Do I need to leave?
No. We work in the attic and clean up when we're done.
Will it lower my bills?
Yes. In older homes with thin attic insulation, adding insulation and sealing air leaks is one of the fastest-paying home upgrades. We'll walk you through what to expect for your house after the assessment.
When can you come?
We're now booking spring 2027. Join the list and we'll call to pick a time.
My bungalow has a finished attic. Can you still help?
Yes. Finished bungalow attics usually have small unfinished spaces behind the knee walls and above the ceiling. Those are often where the heat escapes, and we'll look at all of them.
What kind of insulation do you use?
Blown-in insulation for attic floors, which fills gaps and settles evenly around joists. We'll recommend the right material for your attic during the assessment.
Are there rebates?
Nicor Gas and Peoples Gas offer rebates for attic insulation and air sealing through their participating contractors. We're working to join these programs for 2027, and we'll tell you what applies to your home when we quote.
Make next winter a warmer one.
